Will Wolfeboro, NH, Ever Be The Same Again?

by Phyllis & Bill Leithead

Wolfeboro, known as the oldest summer resort in America, has experienced many exciting and memorable celebrations. The July 4th Parade of 1999 was one that will be long remembered for the great participation of so many groups with their beautiful floats. What better way to involve young people to learn the history and events in this great country.

Of all the outstanding floats the one that captured many onlookers was the "Moxie" Flotilla. A GMC Suburban van covered with hundreds of empty Moxie cans pulling a large flat bed also covered with Moxie cans and empty Moxie bottles. In the middle of the giant 6´ Hi x 3´ dia model of a can of Moxie, in front of this "The Statue of Moxie" (Sarah Burt standing with crown on her head and a bottle of Moxie high in her hand), a bottle of Moxie with flowing Moxie in a 55 gallon drum and a real live jazz drummer beating out a perfect rhythm to great music.

All this was the result of a very talented group of high school students who saved all the containers they drank of Moxie from over the past year. The group includes Allison and Amy Bigelow, Isaac Chellman (the drummer), Sarah Burt, Jenn Marks, Mark Piehl, and others. Fred Piehl, Mark's dad, was kind enough to give these neat young people a hand and used his suburban and helped decorate. Jenn Marks was the one responsible for the design of the large "Moxie" can.

This group also put together and purchased cans of Moxie and gave out close to 300 ice cold cans of Moxie to parade onlookers. All this effort, all this fun, resulted in their winning First Prize in their division.

Congratulations to all these young people and the display they put on. They are Moxie lovers and show it.

To answer the question "Will Wolfeboro ever be the same again?" I'm sure it will and it could even be a better place -- perhaps known as "America´s Oldest Summer Resort" AND the Moxie Capital of New Hampshire.
