The sky was a deep, ominous shade of gray that bordered on black. The air was saturated with moisture that foretold of the coming rain causing his clothes stick to his body in uncomfortable ways. The sun was nowhere to be seen, but the heat of the day was still oppressive. This was not a good day to hold a company picnic.
He heard his wife calling.
"Come in here, you old fool, you'll get soaked when the rain comes." She was telling him as the beckoned him into the tent.
He took one last grudging look at the clouds before turning to go under the protective roof of the tent the company was renting for some exorbitant fee.
"Don't you think I have enough sense to come in out of the rain when it starts?" he asked semi-sarcastically.
"No. No I don't, you'd probably stay out there still staring at those clouds." came her reply. This was followed by hearty laughter from all his co-workers and employees.
He wondered to himself if they all really thought that, or if it was just his wife. He had no doubt she did. She was probably right too, but his co-workers and employees hopefully thought more of him than to think he didn't have the presence of mind to come in out of the rain. He did as ordered, and came into the tent. It was overcrowded and tremendously hot. The only place where there was enough space to be comfortable was near the grill, but the heat over there was beyond human endurance. He decided he'd give it a shot anyway, and moved sluggishly in that direction.
Standing there, amidst the smoke and heat and flying sparks, stood Eric Sharpe. Eric was only recently hired. He was assistant director of sales, a job for which he was terribly over qualified for. Normally he did the work of two, and today was no different. Not only was he the only one brave enough to stand close enough to the grill to cook, but he served as entertainment as well. His jokes kept any one near in riotous laughter, not that there were many near. Without him this whole thing would have been a bomb. He was finding that to be the case more and more often. Eric would be president some day. No longer were his own stuff red-leather chair business ideas applicable, Eric's thought slashing manner was the vogue.
